DAL Welding Engineering

Services Provided

  • Welding Engineering

DAL Welding Engineering employs professional engineers who are certified to act as Welding Engineers as defined by CSA W47.1 and W47.2 for the purpose of providing retainer services for companies wishing to be certified under the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) CSA W47.1 and/or W47.2 (Steel and/or Aluminum). This service includes:

  • Preparation of Welding Engineering Standards and Specifications
  • Preparation of welding data sheets for SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW and SAW processes.
  • Preparation of welding data sheets for speciality materials and alloys such as stainless steels, dissimilar materials, and high nickel alloys such as C276.
  • Quarterly shop audits
  • Guidance for certification of welding personnel, shop and equipment set-up and other welding issues.
  • DAL Welding Engineering also employs professional engineers certified as Welding Engineers in accordance with the International Institute of Welding (IIW). The IIW welding engineer provides not only procedures for welding, but also provides design and analysis of welds to ensure they are capable of carrying their intended loads. Some examples of this type of welding engineering services include:

  • Weld design of failure/fatigue sensitive weldments.
  • Weld design and sequencing for highly restrained weldments to reduce shrinkage and distortion.
  • Weld repair procedures for crane runway structures, bridge crane structures, bridges, mobile cranes, and lifting devices.
  • Weld repair procedures for specialized equipment such as crushers, mills, converters, and rail equipment.
    • Welding Procedures

DAL Welding Engineering specializes in welded joint design and the development of welding procedures to meet stringent quality and design requirements. Variables taken into consideration include:

  • Load cases
  • Standards, code, and regulation compliance
  • Materials and repair conditions
  • Service conditions and requirements
  • Welder and operator qualifications
  • Equipment, time, facility, budget limitations
  • Welding procedures can be developed in your shop for new consumables and processes. We have an extensive database of welding procedures for different processes and materials. Your existing procedures can be documented to meet your specific requirements including certification. Obtain Procedures for:

  • CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau)
  • AWS (American Welding Society)
  • ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)
  • CSA (Canadian Standards Association)
  • DAL Welding Engineering develops Welding Engineering Standards (WES), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and data sheets in accordance with applicable codes, standards and regulations.

    • Metal Failure and Root Cause Analysis

Metal failure analysis can be an important first step for minimizing repeat occurrences of the same failure mechanism. An experienced failure analysis consultant can save you money in the following ways:

  • For each failure, determine whether a failure analysis is justified in terms of the likely outcomes (dollars saved and safety ramifications)
  • Efficiently pinpoint the cause(s) of a failure
  • Make appropriate recommendations
    • CWB Retained Engineers Services

In Alberta and throughout Canada, it is a legal requirement that all steel structures, including tank supports, welded-on tank access ladders, and small portable structures like skid packages, be fabricated and erected by CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) certified companies.

To be certified as Division I, a company must employ a CWB certified welding engineer.

To be certified as Division II, a company must retain a CWB certified welding engineer.

Make DAL Welding Engineering Your Ad Hoc Engineering Department

DAL Welding Engineering provides CWB Retained Engineering services to companies that require CWB certification to Division II as a component of their structural steel fabrication and erection operations.

DAL Welding Engineering's CWB certified welding engineers will guide your company through the process of obtaining and maintaining CWB certification (CSA W47.1 and W47.2 Steel and Aluminum), including:

  • A due diligence review and assistance in meeting the CWB application criteria
  • Making the initial application
  • Developing Welding Procedure Specifications and Welding Procedure Data Sheets
  • Acting as Retained Engineer
  • Visiting your site for quarterly audits to your registered facility as per CSA W47.1, W47.2 and completing the required engineering reports for your company records
  • Advising you in all aspects of maintaining compliance (as per CSA W47.1, W47.2 and CSA W59)
